Due to the growing complexity of the research and development projects under way, both the scientists and the engineers trust more and more frequently in computer modeling and computer simulation as aids to support their designs and experiments.
Scientific Computing deals with the practical design and implementation of precise, reliable solution strategies for scientific or technological problems by means of computers as the basic tool. This is an inherently multidisciplinary area in applied research for the rigorous treatment of complex systems. In this context, the major role of the specialist consists in carrying out research into the most efficient way of solving realistic problems with the help of computers, so that they are judiciously exploited.
Then, the fundamental goal of our Laboratory for Research and Development in Scientific Computing (LIDeCC) is to conduct research into the employment of modern computational strategies in order to solve complex problems of great interest to various fields. The relevant topics comprise a wide variety of subjects, such as those related to chemical engineering, environmental analysis, biology, and economics.
Our academic purpose in LIDeCC is to offer useful training for students so that they learn how to find out new facts or to test novel ideas in the context of a team work, i.e. in a multidisciplinary creative environment. In this way, six members of the laboratory have graduated as Doctors in Computer Science, and one student, who has graduated as a PhD in Chemical Engineering developing his thesis within LIDeCC, has successfully been incorporated into industry. Nowadays, LIDeCC has four graduate students working on their Master Programs, and six graduate students doing research on their Doctoral Theses.
The creation of LIDeCC is a valuable achievement in the Department of Engineering and Computer Science (DCIC) of the UNS (Universidad Nacional del Sur). The DCIC now offers a specialization in Scientific Computing open for all graduates in Engineering. This career enables students to get their Master in Scientific Computing.
